Side Effects / Complications of Enucleation or Evisceration Surgery
At Idaho Eyelid and Facial Plastic Surgery, eye removal results in a patient losing vision along with the cosmetic use of the globe. There are a number of complications related to enucleation or evisceration surgery. There include hemorrhage, infection, and extrusion of the implant and are further described below:
- A number of patients with post-operative bleeding/hemorrhage have conditions that necessitate them to be on blood thinners or have some type of bleeding disorder. Hemorrhages are generally treated with analgesic medications, commonly known as pain-killers.
- Orbital infections are quite rare, but can result more frequently with integrated orbital implants. Secondary orbital infections are managed with antibiotics.
- Implant extrusions are managed by surgical replacement of the orbital implant.
Potential Complications
Following enucleation, patients experience a loss in orbital volume along with structural changes. This is referred to as post-enucleation socket syndrome. Treatment may involve reconstruction to restore volume and reposition the remaining structures.
